Mastectomy

Mastectomy surgery is the removal of all breast tissue including the nipple. The surgeon’s priority is the removal of the tumour, everyones surgery is different due to the location the size and the removal of the tumour. Scars can vary in shape, contour and texture due to individual healing.

Looking at pictures on the internet of breast surgery or comparing yourself with others who have already had the surgery is not advised, your surgery is unique to you and your well being, your treatment is tailored to your recovery.

The Bra Clinic provides an appointment based service in comfortable and private surroundings for ladies who have had breast surgery. Bras can be supplied with pockets if required, though it is not essential to have a pocket for the prosthesis although many women feel more secure with one. Underwired bras are not advisd until surgery is fully healed,if you prefer to wear a wired bra then a bra with a flexi- wire is recommended, this is a softer flexible wire has been designed to be comfortable and compatable with the prothesis. Due to loss of feeling around the surgery area it is important to observe the bra fit regulary, making sure there are no red marks or imprints from the bra.

Styles of bras to consider after mastectomy:

  • Good coverage of surgery
  • Supportive and comfortable
  • With or without pockets (self preference, most ladies I advise have a bra with a pocket to secure the breast form).
